I just came across a thread on MacRumors about that but got a little scared when I saw how much work is involved in doing that. Use OpenCore to get a ‘bootscreen’ - it will let you select which disk to boot from (OS X, recovery etc etc) Many thanks for the exceptionally fast reply! Much appreciated. Hope everyone is keeping well and staying safe through these odd times. Many thanks to anyone that can lend a hand with this. The last question would be I've seen mention of an application for OSX called Boot Runner which people have been saying you can use instead of a boot screen? What exactly does that do if it just pops up over the login screen? Does it popup and allow you to enter the same modes as holding down the alt key would or does it allow you to get to something which would do the same sort of thing?Īpologies in advance for so many questions but I've read so many pages and pages now about people who have been through all of this and am now to be honest a little confused so hopefully it is okay to ask all these questions in one go and get it all sorted in one go as it were.

Would that allow me to hold down option to boot in that way or because I've updated to Mojave would that no longer work? I'm of the mind that hopefully that would work as it would be using a hidden partition to load from? I believe that might be correct?Īlong that line I'm wondering how to keep the second (original) graphics card in the machine at the same time as the RX580 as I believe there are only 2 X 6 pin connectors for power which I will be using both for the RX580 and the original card currently uses one of those slots so how would I power the original card if needed? Would it literally be a case of opening the Mac if I ever needed to boot in that way and swap a cable over?Īlso another question on that would be, is it safe to have a graphics card in the machine but it's not plugged into one of the 6 pin connectors for power? Does it need to be plugged into one of those sockets even when not being used? Just don't want to damage anything. Should I keep the original graphics card that came with the machine installed in another slot so that I can boot from that if needs be? I was therefore just wondering if I do ever have any problems with the system going forward then what can I do to allow me to fix it if the RX580 won't display a boot screen?

I understand from what I've read on the internet that I won't have a boot screen with this card (or many others for that matter) without paying a high price to someone to flash it for me.

I now want to update to Mojave and so have bought a Radeon RX580 so that I can get metal support to enable me to install that system. Have had literally no problems with it and am on High Sierra currently (10.13.6). I have a Mac Pro 5,1 (Mid 2010) which I bought when they first came out.
